Persistent Absence (PA) Threshold Information

The Government announced that from 1st September 2015 the persistent absent (PA) threshold criteria would be reduced from 15% to 10%.

A pupil becomes a ‘persistent absentee’ when he/she misses 10% or more of schooling across the school year for whatever reason.

The table below simplifies this criterion:

Terms Persistent Absence 10%
Term 1 4.5 days or more
Term 1 & 2 7 days or more
Term 1, 2 & 3 10 days or more
Term 1, 2, 3 & 4 12.5 days or more
Term 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5 15.5 days or more
Term 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6 19 days or more

Facts:

  • Minimum attendance of 96% (10 days absence per year) means that during primary years the child will miss more than a term of education.

  • If attendance is between 90-96% (10-20 days absence per year) it means that during primary years the child will miss 2 or more terms of education.

  • If attendance is between 85-90% (20-30 days absence per year) it means that during primary years the child will miss over a year of education.

Persistent Absence Levels

As a school we work hard to reduce our Persistent Absence levels. We monitor all absences thoroughly and send out letters to parents and carers where we feel necessary. If we see no improvement in attendance, we then invite those parents and carers of our persistently absent children into school for a meeting with the Headteacher and Attendance Officer.

We monitor attendance thoroughly and any case that is seen to have reached the PA mark or is at risk of moving towards that mark is given priority.

As a school we know the benefits of regular attendance for the children’s learning and that those children who are persistently absent are at risk of not reaching their full potential.  We want to work with all of our parents and carers and support you in getting your child to attend school as much as possible.
