In science, Year 5 has learned how the doors we have in classes are leavers.

A machine is an object with moving parts that make it easier for us to do something. So we need less force (effort) to move a mass (load).

The machine has a pivot point (where it turns) called the fulcrum.

The door is a type of lever. The load (the wood of the door) is between where the effort is made (the place where we push the door) and the fulcrum (the hinges).

You need less effort if you move the door to a place far from the fulcrum and load.
